Community Events

SFD crews can be found at many community safety events.

SFD participates in many community events, bringing safety messages and demonstrations to the public.  Working with schools and local organizers, SFD will demonstrate hands-only CPR, how to use an AED device, and how to use a fire extinguisher.  Crews will also offer safety messages regarding hiking, biking, weather-related concerns, and fire safety.

For information on school safety programs, visit the Community Risk Reduction Community Outreach and Educational page.

Technical Training Classes

SFD provides technical skills training to neighboring agencies in remote or challenging topography rescues.

Several highly experienced and professionally trained SFD personnel are certified trainers in their area of special operations, conducting formal training classes to neighboring state and local agencies.  Working year round in one of the most beautiful and topographically challenging environments has afforded members to hone their skills and safely train others in ropes rescues (TRT), swiftwater rescues, and helicopter evacuation.

Our Short Haul Team works in cooperation with the Air Rescue Helicopter (Ranger) to provide a variety of services — search, rescue, transport, and advanced emergency medical services — for critically injured or ill patients. The DPS helicopter and highly trained crews are a key component of this service.  Because of the inherent risks involved, short-haul rescues are performed only in extreme circumstances and only by highly skilled professionals.

When enjoying the outdoors, whether as a novice or an experienced hiker, it is always a good idea to carry a cell or satellite phone, tell someone where you’ll be, and know your abilities and limitations.
